Piquet Carneiro railway accident
The Piquet Carneiro railway accident on December 17, 1951 was a derailment due to excessive speed at the train station of Piquet Carneiro , in the state of Ceará , in northeastern Brazil . At least 53 deaths were the result, according to another source around 100.
The accident happened on the railway line Fortaleza - Crato of Rede Ferroviária do Nordeste .
The train had left Crato the day before and had stopped overnight in Iguatu . From there he had left at 5 a.m. On the morning of the day of the accident, he derailed at excessive speed near the Piquet Carneiro train station. Numerous victims were trapped in the wreckage of the vehicles . The high number of victims among the passengers was also due to the very inadequate rescue measures and the poor first aid at the accident site.
A memorial to the victims was erected at the accident site , which was restored in 2009.
