Sahiwal railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Sahiwal railway accident on September 29, 1957 , a passenger train ran into a freight train at Montgomery (now Sahiwal ) train station in the Punjab Province , Pakistan . At least 250 people died.

Starting position

The affected railway line was not equipped with route signals in the Montgomery area . The locomotive drivers had to rely on the driving commands of the dispatchers , on which only the overall operational safety depended. The accident happened shortly before midnight, in the dark.

The freight train had stopped at Montgomery station. Among other things, he had loaded oil. It was followed by a passenger train from the west of Pakistan to Karachi , which was completely overcrowded.

the accident

The dispatcher at Montgomery Station forgot to reset the switch of the route the freight train had traveled on behind the train. The driver of the following passenger train could only see the freight train standing in front of him at the last moment due to the nighttime visibility. He therefore drove into the end of the freight train at full speed. The oil carried by the freight train immediately exploded and set the trains on fire. Bodies were found several hundred meters from the scene of the accident.

consequences

At least 250 people died and 150 others were injured.

1924 accident

On August 29, 1924, 107 people died and 104 were injured when two passenger trains collided in what was then known as the "Montgomery" station after a mistake by the dispatcher.
