In the Studénka railway accident on August 8, 2008 near Studénka , Czech Republic , the EuroCity Comenius drove into the rubble of a bridge that had collapsed shortly before. Eight people died.

Starting position

About the traffic from the train railway Breclav-Petrovice u Karviné of the leads in the southwest exit station Studénka street 464 with a steel bridge. The bridge was rebuilt. The executing company was the Czech subsidiary of the German construction company Max Bögl , Bögl a Krýsl.

The EuroCity Comenius was on its way from Krakow to Prague on the morning of August 8, 2008 . The train passed through Studénka station - as planned - on this day without stopping and was traveling at around 135 km / h.

the accident

When the EuroCity passed the train station at around 10:30 a.m., the bridge under construction fell onto the railway line underneath immediately in front of the train. The engineer immediately initiated an emergency maneuver , but could only reduce h to approximately 120 km / the speed of the train. The locomotive derailed and the five following cars wedged together.

consequences

Eight people died in the accident. 95 were also injured, some seriously.

The material damage was estimated by the Czech Railway Safety Inspectorate , Drážní inspekce , at 136 million Czech crowns (about 5.6 million euros ).

Investigations

A main cause for the bridge collapse could not be determined, just a multitude of negligence and defects. The long-standing legal dispute before the Nový Jičín Regional Court against ten defendants - three employees of the general contractor ODS (Dopravní stavby Ostrava, now Eurovia ), five employees and an independent subcontractor of the construction company Bögl a Krýsl and a worker who oversees the regional road administration - ended on December 7, 2017 for lack of evidence with the acquittal of all defendants.
