Velilla de Ebro railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the railway accident at Velilla de Ebro on December 3, 1940, the two express trains Madrid - Barcelona and the return train Barcelona - Madrid of the RENFE collided near Velilla de Ebro in the province of Saragossa . 48 people died.

the accident

The Madrid – Barcelona line was largely single-track at the time . The train coming from Madrid was delayed, so the intersection with the opposite train was moved from La Puebla de Híjar station to Velilla de Ebro station . However, after entering the station, the driver of the train from Madrid ran over the exit signal from the station. The two trains collided head-on.

It is not known whether the exit signal indicated "Halt" or whether there was a malfunction in the signal systems . Information about railway accidents was suppressed by the Franco dictatorship and documents were often destroyed.

consequences

48 people died in the accident and another 90 were injured. They were taken to hospitals in Zaragoza .
