Hardware store LJ Ettlinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hardware store LJ Ettlinger was one of the most famous Jewish shops in downtown Karlsruhe and was one of the oldest companies in Karlsruhe.

history

The company was founded in 1832 by Lazarus Joseph Ettlinger, the younger brother of Veit Ettlinger 's lawyer at the court . After LJ Ettlinger's death in 1867, his sons Leopold and Theodor took over the business, of whom Leopold was primarily responsible for the further rise.

The hardware store LJ Ettlinger was located at Kronenstrasse 24 in downtown Karlsruhe, and the company also had a location in Karlsruhe's Rheinhafen at Hochbahnstrasse 1.

After Leopold Ettlinger's death in 1912, his daughter Antonie Elsas (1876–1939) took over the company with her husband Martin Elsas . Another partner was the son of Leopold Ettlinger's sister Antonie Neumann (1838–1927), Leopold Neumann . In 1916 the descendants of Therese and Leopold Ettlinger founded the non-denominational " Foundation for Youth Welfare and Holiday Colonies " which was provided with a capital of 20,000 marks.

On June 1, 1938, the party newspaper " Der Fuehrer " announced: " As of today, the iron trading company will be removed from Jewish influence ". This "transfer of ownership " in the context of the so-called " Aryanizations " was presented to the outside world as voluntary, although considerable pressure had been exerted on the owners to sell their company. Originally, the owners had proposed a purchase price of RM 400,000, but it was then sold for RM 100,000 to Montangesellschaft Saar mbH , which immediately announced that it was anxious to " continue to run this company in the National Socialist spirit and back to his to bring old meaning ". The company was transferred to the house of the Stumm brothers in Neunkirchen via the Saar mining company in Mannheim .
