Veit Ettlinger

Veit Ettlinger (* 1796 in Karlsruhe ; † July 24, 1877 there ) was a German lawyer and local politician.

Origin and studies

The son of a factory owner and Karlsruhe citizen grew up in Karlsruhe and strove to study law after school. Since he was a Jew , he had to submit a request to the Grand Ducal Baden authorities, which was then approved with the comment that "... the Israelites' prospects for real employment in the civil service are extremely limited" . It was further stated: “If Veit Ettlinger nevertheless wants to learn law at high schools in Germany and abroad at his own risk, that is left to him and unchecked.” Ettlinger studied from 1815 to 1819 at the University of Heidelberg , where he lectured with Carl Theodor Welcker , Karl Salomo Zachariae , Anton Friedrich Justus Thibaut and Johann Caspar Gensler heard.

After completing his studies, Ettlinger became a legal trainee at the Karlsruhe City Office for two years and, after many attempts and rejections, was employed as court counsel and procurator at the court in Bruchsal in 1824 .

Public offices

Veit Ettlinger was one of those Jews in Karlsruhe who were active as local citizens after their equality. From 1841 onwards he was elected several times elector for the Baden Estates Assembly and in the same position in 1848 for the Frankfurt National Assembly and in 1950 for the Erfurt Union Parliament . In 1848 he was elected to the first Jewish city council of Karlsruhe and remained in this position until 1870. The “Karlsruher Zeitung” reported on this after his election: “Mr. Ettlinger, as a citizen and as a legal scholar, is in high regard, belongs to the Israelite faith, and This election is the first realization of one of the German basic rights, which has not yet been proclaimed, but has passed into the juice and blood of public opinion. ” Ettlinger left the committee after the retirement of Mayor Jakob Malsch , with whom he was friends .

Ettlinger was also active in Jewish organizations. From 1833 to 1844 Veit Ettlinger was chairman of the synagogue council in Karlsruhe. After the “General State Association in the Grand Duchy of Baden for the Improvement of the Internal and External Conditions of the Jews” was founded in Bühl in October 1845 , Ettlinger was elected among others in its executive committee.

Veit Ettlinger's father was the owner of a saffiano leather factory . His family had been living in Karlsruhe for a long time. The later chief rabbi of Altona Jakob Ettlinger also belonged to the other group of relatives . His younger brother Lazarus Josef Ettlinger founded the LJ Ettlinger hardware store , which was later known beyond Karlsruhe .

Ettlinger first married Fanny Homburger, who was born in Karlsruhe and who died of childbed fever after a few years and with whom he had three children. His second wife Sara b. He married Kaulla in 1830. She came from Augsburg . He had ten children with her, including the singer and singing teacher Emilie Kaulla (1833-1912) and the writer Anna Ettlinger (1841-1934). He lived with his family on Zähringer Strasse at the height of Kronenstrasse, not far from his parents' house, which had been built by Friedrich Weinbrenner .

Some artists were regular guests at Veit Ettlinger's house, such as the Karlsruhe conductor Hermann Levi , his friend Johannes Brahms and the painter, photographer and later biographer of Anselm Feuerbach , Julius Allgeyer .

Ettlinger was awarded the Baden Order for Special Achievements for his services .
