He was also a member of the Karlsruhe city council for 40 years and was a member of its executive board with a three-year break from 1889 to 1912. Leopold Ettlinger also held outstanding positions in the Jewish community. From 1891 he was a member of the Karlsruhe Synagogue Council and in 1895 became a member of the regional synod and at the same time a member of the upper council.

His son Max (Mosche Tuviah; * May 12, 1880; † August 18, 1927) studied mechanical engineering in Karlsruhe, his daughter Antonie (* May 2, 1876; † November 3, 1939) took over with her husband Martin Elsas together with Leopold Neumann , a son of his sister Antonie Neumann, the hardware store of her grandfather LJ Ettlinger.

Leopold Ettlinger is buried in Karlsruhe in the liberal Jewish cemetery Haid- und Neu-Straße. His wife Therese Ettlinger, his son Max, his daughter Antonie and his son-in-law Martin Elsas are also buried in the same tomb.
