Iron Maiden (Budweis)

The Iron Maiden (Czech Železná panna ) is a Gothic four-story tower of the medieval city fortifications in Budweis, probably built in the 14th century . In addition to city defense, it also served as an arsenal, prison and was later inhabited. Today there is a museum with an exposition dealing with the town's founder Přemysl Otakar II .

Surname

From the 15th century, the tower was called "Spielhaybl Tower" and was given the name "Iron Maiden", which is common today, during the Romantic era. According to a legend, the Iron Maiden torture device was supposed to have been in the tower . Today you can find a model of that torture instrument in the tower museum.
