The term has different meanings in the German-speaking area .

An ice house is a walled or roofed extension built from boards or a room of a mill in which the water wheel is housed to protect against frost . This construction also explains the name.

In the Bergisches Land , an ice house denotes the direct inflow from the reservoir or, if the mill is not directly on the pond, through the ice excavation to one or more predominantly overshot water wheels . It can consist of wooden planks, natural stone or, more recently, concrete slabs, steel / cast iron or a combination of these building materials. The terms switch , Schault , flood box or ice house are either used synonymously or are site-specific. While the word ice house is common in Remscheid , the term Schalt or Schault is predominantly used in neighboring Solingen . Examples include the Manuelskotten , the Steffenshammer , the Jasperskotten or the Hundsschüppe .
