The ice rink Gletscher is the northernmost ice rink in Germany. The ice rink is located north of Flensburg in Harrislee by the customs settlement near Kupfermühle .

background

The ice rink was built in 1983 in the historic Alte Zollstrasse , just a hundred meters from the German-Danish border crossing near Krusau . It opened in 1984 and is a part of since 2003 to Fleggaard belonging Corporation Best Western Hotel of the North .

The ice rink was usually open from November 1st to April 1st. The hall is covered, but open to the north. As a result, it is not a closed ice rink, which is theoretically suitable for various ice sports, but not for curling . The hall was primarily used by ice skaters. This offer was for everyone, there was an own ice skate rental. From 1985 to 2004 the Flensburg EC ( ice hockey ) played its home games in the ice rink Gletscher. Ice stock sport was also practiced in the glacier hall. Ice hockey was only played as a hobbyist in the glacier hall. Other sports such as speed skating or figure skating do not exist in the Flensburg area .

For events such as ice hockey games or ice stock tournaments, the ice rink offered around 300 spectators. During the season there was an ice disco once a week in the glacier hall. The proximity to the border also made it possible for many Danes to visit the ice rink, because there is a discount store next to the hall , which is mainly geared towards Danish consumers.

In October 2016, the hotel announced the closure of the hall due to stricter environmental laws regarding the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) for cooling. The hotel then considered purchasing a more modern refrigeration system. The provision of financial resources by the Harrislee community was also discussed. A wellness zone was also considered as a future use .
