Ekdromoi
The Ekdromoi were lightly armed hoplites in the Greek army.
description
These units were for poorer sections of the population who had to do military service but could not afford expensive hoplite equipment. Otherwise they had the same equipment as the classic hoplites, including sarissa and helmet, but not a muscle armor , but a leather spolas . Their training was much shorter than that of the hoplites, they usually did not master the phalanx , so they were faster and still effective against cavalry .
On the battlefield, they were used to round up enemies or to chase refugees.
