Extra weekend

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ekstra Weekend (German: Ekstra weekend) was a radio broadcast by the Dutch public broadcaster NTR . It has been broadcast on the 3FM channel every Friday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. since September 1, 2006 . The moderators were Gerard Ekdom and Michiel Veenstra , who are very popular in the Netherlands, and the play on words "Ekstra" in the name of the show is a case word from the family names of both DJs. If one of the regular DJs is missing, Domien Verschuuren steps in under the pseudonym "Iemand Anders" (someone else). Also the producer of the show, Tjitse Leemhuis, is regularly on the program with the microphone (under the pseudonym "Tjibbe Tjibsma"). With the broadcast on December 13, 2013 Ekstra Weekend was discontinued.

The broadcast

Ekstra Weekend made particular use of the possibilities of electronic communication. Like most radio broadcasts on 3FM, the program was also broadcast as a video stream on the broadcaster's website (long before this became common in Germany). While 3FM usually used stationary webcams that could be rotated and swiveled over time, Ekstra Weekend also used cameramen with mobile cameras in the studio in recent years. Individual aspects of the program were only partially comprehensible to the pure radio listener or were simply hidden (e.g. the pet shop boys parodies of the presenters while music was playing). The moderators were also in close contact with the listeners during the broadcast, whereby - in addition to the telephone - originally the studio fax was used, later also SMS , which were also displayed in the stream, as well as increasingly social media such as Twitter and Facebook . This led to a lively exchange between the moderators and the listeners, but also among the listeners. In some cases, content created by listeners was used during the broadcast; sometimes the moderators also sent their own photos and videos from the studio via various channels during or shortly after the broadcast.

As a “webcam show”, the show was a hybrid between radio and television format. Production took place in the normal 3FM radio studio without the professional demands of a TV program (e.g. the cameras were hardly coordinated with one another in terms of white balance, brightness, image resolution, etc., often blurred and blurred; special light, studio equipment, mask, etc. were used largely omitted). The look of the video stream is reminiscent of the look of many amateur videos and thus appeals to an Internet-savvy audience who follow the program frequently via the Internet (or on the Dutch digital TV channel 101 TV , which has been watching the program since March 6th 2009 also broadcast).

The show was the successor to the show Lantinga & Swijnenberg and has been running since Wouter van der Goes switched to Q-Music. After Van der Goes' departure, Coen Zwijnenberg and Sander Lantinga took over his slot in the afternoon with the Coen and Sander Show . This freed up a slot on Friday evening that was occupied with Ekstra Weekend.

On October 2nd, 2009 it was announced that Ekstra Weekend had been nominated for the Dutch radio award “De Gouden RadioRing” (German: The golden RadioRing). On October 1, 2010, the show was nominated again for this audience award; in both cases, however, the shipment did not receive the award.

Program items

De uuropener (hour jingle)

Each program begins with an opening jingle . The jingles will be spoken by 3FM DJ Eric Corton .

De weekendroep (The "weekend call")

After two songs were played at the beginning of the show, Gerard and Michiel officially open the weekend. They take a deep breath and then shout "Weekend" together.

De Voicelift

Gerard and Michiel play an interview with a famous person whose voice is distorted. If the listeners think they know the correct answer, they can call the studio. The first caller usually gives the name Ron Brandsteder , whereupon Michiel looks in every corner of the studio and in front of the studio door to see whether Ron Brandsteder is really there. Gerard lets hear a fragment of a laughing Ron Brandsteder. Michiel had got the shock of his life on February 20, 2009 when Rick Brandsteder stood behind the door. On December 17, 2010, Ron Brandsteder was actually live on the show for the first time.

Ekstra Weekend brievenbus (The Ekstra Weekend mailbox)

Michiel and Gerard read mail from listeners. In addition, the beginning of the song “IGY” by Donald Fagen runs in the background as an endless loop. Often letters arrive that allegedly come from listeners in Germany. However, the texts often contain errors that show that the sender is by no means German. The German national anthem is played, Gerard reads the letter screaming and satirizing the ugly German.

Wisseling van de wacht (The Changing of the Guard)

At 8:30 p.m. (but almost always later) Ekdom and Veenstra change seats in the studio. This is combined with a lot of shouting, then Ekdom and Veenstra fall back on their seats, exhausted. For the studio guest, this is usually an amazing experience, because he has no idea what the two DJs are doing - and above all why.

The Ekstra Weekend weather forecast

Michiel Veenstra reads the weather forecast quickly and incomprehensibly . The pronunciation caricatures typical DJ attitudes, completely incomprehensible jokes provide great amusement.

Uit het raam ("Out of the window")

At this point in the program, a larger object, mostly discarded studio technology, computers, etc., is thrown out of the studio window onto the street. Usually the guest is allowed to do this. The volume when it crashes on the floor is measured and added to a hit list. A telephone warning to the security of the studio building is an integral part of the campaign. Some security guards already have their own jingles that are played when they answer the phone. The most popular jingle is that of "Jean-Paul". When Jean-Paul is not on duty, the security guards are often asked to call “Jean-Paul” on the phone anyway in order to have an opportunity to play this jingle.

5 questions (the 5 questions)

For studio guests there is a list of fifty questions, but each guest should only choose five. The guest names a number between 1 and 50 and answers the corresponding question below. The question and answer session always starts with the words “Wij hebben hier een lijstje met 50 vracht” (we have a list of 50 questions here). This usually leads to confusion among the guests because they think they have to answer all the questions.

Het secret woord (The secret word)

A caller can win prizes by using a pre-agreed word. The caller calls a friend who doesn't know he's on the radio. Let this friend guess the word through various clues. These are mostly words that are not used in everyday life. If the friend has guessed the word, the polka version of "She's too fat for me" by James Last sounds , and the people present dance through the studio singing. Since 2011 there has also been a carnival version of the song.

Operation DJ Sandstorm

A short mix of about five minutes is played on each program. This mix is produced every week by DJ Sandstorm and contains around five different songs.

De Kazoo Classic

A song in which a kazoo was used during the recording is played in each program . At the beginning of every program it is always the song "And So They Say" by David Schnitter .

Trivia

  • When a song is played by the Pet Shop Boys , the "Pet Shop Boys Alarm" sounds. While playing the song, Gerard put a hat with a red rotating beacon on his head and Michiel put a traffic cone (pylon) on his head and parody the typical music videos of the Pet Shop Boys.
  • As soon as the word “earlier” is mentioned, the disc jockeys put a paper cup on their microphones. This creates the typical tinny sound of old radio and television broadcasts. The conversation that follows is mostly about topics from the past.
  • Often the two DJs behave irrationally. As a justification for their behavior they then say: "Gewoon omdat het kan!" (Simply because it is possible!)
