El Infiernillo is a large dam in Mexico . The name Infiernillo means "little hell". It is also called "Presa Adolfo Lopez Mateos" after the former President of Mexico Adolfo López Mateos . It is located about 70 kilometers from La Tzaráracua in the municipality of Arteaga in the states of Michoacán and Guerrero and in the Sierra Madre del Sur .
The reservoir is more than 100 kilometers long. The rivers Río Tepalcatepec and Río Balsas (also Rio de las Balsas ) are dammed here. The barrier structure , a dam made of earth, is 175 meters high. (There are also other specifications of 140 or 150 meters.)
The dam was put into operation on June 15, 1964 and inaugurated in 1966. Their hydropower plant was not fully expanded until 1975. From 1963, its output was initially 675 MW, in 1975 1030 MW were added, a total of 1705 MW. El Infiernillo is one of four hydropower plants in the state of Guerrero. The others are La Venta, La Villita and El Caracol.
