from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

El Museo Mexicano or The Mexican Museum ( German : The Mexican Museum ) is a museum in San Francisco that was founded in 1975 by the artist Peter Rodríguez .

The original goal was to "exhibit the aesthetic expression of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans " in this museum . Then there was also the art of Latinos and Chicanos . The museum was the first of its kind outside of Mexico. Today the museum, which moved from San Francisco's Mission District to the Fort Mason Center in 1982, has over 12,000 exhibits.

In 2001 the decision was made to permanently relocate the museum to San Francisco's Yerba Buena Arts District. The new building was designed by Ricardo Legorreta , whose work won the 2006 Design Award from the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA).
