from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elalan (235 BC - 161 BC), also known as Elara and Élaezha Chola (எல்லாளன், மனு நீதி சோழன் in Tamil), was a Chola king from the Chola Kingdom in what is now South India, Sri Lanka from 205 BC BC to 161 BC Ruled from the old capital Anuradhapura . Elalan was often referred to as the "King of Justice" ( Manuniti Chola , Manu Needhi Cholan ). Elalan is an unusual figure in the history of Sri Lanka and one with all the resonance given the ongoing ethnic unrest in the country. According to the Chronicle of Mahavamsa , Dutugemunu had defeated the Elalan in a duel on elephants and had a monument erected for him in Anuradhapura out of respect and recognition.

The Black Tigers guerrilla group in Sri-Lanka gave its name to Operation Ellaa'lan , which began in 2007 .
