Eldar Efendijev (born June 29, 1954 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician of Azerbaijani origin. He belongs to the Estonian Center Party ( Eesti Keskerakond ).

Life and politics

Eldar Efendijev graduated from secondary school in Narva, northeast Estonia, in 1971 . Until 1976 he studied at the State Pedagogical Institute in Leningrad . From 1976 to 1978 he was a research assistant at the Museum of the City of Narva, in 1978/79 he became branch manager there and was director of the museum from 1979 to 1999 and 2001/2002.

In 1997 Efendijev joined the center-left Estonian Center Party. From 1996 to 1999 and 2001/2002 he was a member of the city council of the third largest Estonian city Narva. In 1999/2000 he was Lord Mayor of Narva.

From January 2001 to April 2003 Efendijev was Minister of Population of the Republic of Estonia in the cabinet of Prime Minister Siim Kallas . Among other things, Efendijev was responsible for a better integration of the Russian-speaking minority into Estonian society. Efendijev has been a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) since 2003 .

Private life

Efendijev is married. He has four daughters.
