Eleazar ( Hebrew אֶלְעָזָר, not to be confused with the son of Moses and Zippora , Eliezer ) is mentioned for the first time in the second book of Moses (Exodus), chapter 6.23 , as the third of the four sons of Aaron . He belonged to the Levi tribe . His father Aaron, the brother of the prophet Moses , married Elisheba, who came from the family of Judah . His two older brothers died while offering “a strange fire” to God in the tabernacle ( Leviticus 10:: 1). When his father Aaron, the previous high priest, died on Mount Hor, Eleazar was given the office of high priest ( Numbers 20:28) through Moses to perform the service in the tabernacle . Moses even asked him to put on Aaron's clothes.

Later Eleazar, together with Joshua , the direct successor of Moses, determines the division of the promised land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel (Numbers 34:17).

After ex 6.25  EU he was married to Putiël's daughter. His son Phinehas succeeded him as high priest.
