Eleazar b. R. Moshe Azikri

Eleazar b. R. Mosche Azikri (* 1533 in Safed , † 1600 in Safed) was a Jewish scholar, Kabbalist and poet of the 16th century.

He came from a Sephardic family who settled in Palestine after being driven out of Spain .

Rabbi Eleazar studied the Torah with Josef Sagis and Jakob Berab and is counted among the greatest rabbis and scholars of his time. Among other things, he wrote commentaries on individual tracts of the Palestinian Talmud .

In 1588 he founded the "Sukat Shalom" movement, which wanted to promote devotion to religion among the Jews.

Rabbi Eleazar died in 1600 and was buried in Safed.
