Electronic cash terminal
In Germany, electronic cash terminals (EFT- POS terminals ) are devices for processing payments with credit cards or debit cards . They are available in stationary or mobile versions.
If the terminal the German PIN -based payment method " Girocard can process" is, in Germany approval by the central association of the banking industry on the one hand and by the German banking industry needed the other. A terminal only receives this approval after a detailed assessment by a commissioned security expert.
Payment Methods
- With the Girocard method, electronic payment is made by entering the PIN ( personal identification number ) by the cardholder on a so-called Encrypting PIN pad . The cardholder then has to confirm the payment amount with the green button. The review of the credit limit and a possible card blocking is done with an EFT POS terminal (EFT stands for English. : Electronic funds transfer terminal, literally: electronic-value transmission terminal). After its authorization on credit limit and a daily limit of the customer, the merchant receives the payment confirmation .
- In the case of credit and debit cards with an activated offline payment function, the PIN and the credit limit are checked offline via the EMV chip.
- In addition to payment using the EMV procedure, there is also the electronic SEPA direct debit procedure (ELV). The EFT-POS terminal reads out the account data from the debit card and generates a direct debit with direct debit, which the customer approves by signing directly on the terminal or on a printed receipt. With some terminal providers, risk limitation is implemented by comparing it with a blacklist of the terminal operator. With this electronic payment transaction there is no PIN entry at the card terminal.
