The eSports World Convention (until 2016: Electronic Sports World Cup ), ESWC for short , is, with the exception of 2009, an annual e-sports event. Due to its size and the amount of the prize money, it was considered one of the most important and renowned of its kind in the 2000s. The French company Games-Services Ltd. was the first organizer . (formerly Ligarena ), today the brand belongs to the Berlin media company Webedia GmbH .

history

After the event was launched with an official press release on December 20, 2002, the first Grand Final took place in Paris in the summer of 2003 . In order to be able to participate in the ESWC, one must have won the participation place in a preliminary decision, which usually takes place at a LAN party in the respective home country of the participant.

Until 2008, the Grand Finals were held in France every year , but on February 5, 2008 it was announced that the Grand Final this year will be held outside of San José , California for the first time . This year the ESWC Masters took place for the first time . On September 25, 2008 the committee announced that the ESWC Grand Final 2009 will take place again in Paris-Bercy .

Bankruptcy and a fresh start

In December 2008 the partnership with the main sponsor, the chip manufacturer Nvidia , was terminated. Nvidia had only been a permanent partner and main sponsor of the ESWC since February 2008 and was largely responsible for moving the Grand Finals to the United States . The reason given was the global financial crisis .

After the Grand Final 2009 had been postponed indefinitely to the end of the year on March 20, 2009 due to the economic situation, Games-Services filed for liquidation on March 30, 2009 at the Paris Commercial Court . On April 2, 2009, all employees and managers were released from their duties as a result of the court order. Despite the precarious situation, the Masters of Cheonan was held in May 2009 under the flag of the ESWC.

In August 2009 the “Electronic Sports World Cup” brand was sold to the French event organizer DIP Communication for just € 50,000 . After no competition was held in 2009 due to the insolvency of Games Services, the new owner announced on November 23, 2009 that the ESWC would return for 2010. For the first time there will also be console games in addition to PC games . A little later, a new main sponsor, the French car manufacturer Peugeot , was introduced.
