Elephantis (wife of Danaos)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elephantis ( ancient Greek Ἐλεφαντίς Elephantís ) is one of the wives of Danaos in Greek mythology , to whom she gave birth to two daughters: Hypermestra and Gorgophone .

While at the mass wedding of the 50 daughters of Danaos with the 50 sons of Aegyptus the lot decided on the pairing, their daughters of Aegyptos from the marriage with Argyphie were assigned to their daughters because of their royal origin: Gorgophone married Proteus without lot, while her sister Lynkeus received as husband. Like the other sons of Aegyptus, Proteus was killed by his wife on their wedding night, while Lynkeus was spared by Hypermestra because he had respected her virginity.
