Carl Hermann Steuding (born March 15, 1850 in Emleben near Gotha ; † October 11, 1917 in Dresden - Striesen ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher. He taught at the Ernestinum Gotha (1874–1877), at the secondary school and high school in Wurzen (1877–1905) and headed the royal grammar school in Schneeberg (1905–1916) as rector . His most famous publication is the Handbook of Greek and Roman Mythology .

Life

Hermann Steuding attended the Ernestinum grammar school in Gotha . After graduating, he moved to the University of Jena for the summer semester of 1870 to study classical philology and German . During his studies in 1870 he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in the castle cellar . When the Franco-German War broke out, he interrupted his studies and took part in the fighting as a soldier. He then continued his studies in Jena and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In his unprinted dissertation he dealt with the tradition of the Roman poet Tibullus .

After completing his studies, Steuding taught as a provisional assistant teacher at the Ernestinum Gotha, where he was employed on a permanent basis after passing the teaching examination. On April 1, 1877, he switched to the 1st class secondary school in Wurzen as a senior teacher and participated in its transformation into a royal high school, which took place in 1883. Steuding remained active at this school for more than twenty years before he was appointed rector of the Royal High School in Schneeberg on June 28, 1905 . When he was inaugurated on October 9, 1905, he gave a speech on the nature and importance of high school education in the present . After eleven years of service, Steuding retired in 1916 with the title of "Senior Student Council". He moved to the Striesen district of Dresden and died there on October 11, 1917.

Steuding's original research focus was the textual criticism of the Roman writers. However, through his teaching activities he found new tasks. He published school books on ancient literature, art and culture as well as German literature, which saw several editions, including the monuments of ancient art (1896, 1907) and an annotated school edition of Goethe's Faust (1900, 1911, 1918). He laid down his views on German literary instruction in a treatise that was published in 1898 under the title The Treatment of German National Literature in the Upper Primary School of the High School in the main works of Goethe . His most important and most widespread work is the Handbook of Greek and Roman Mythology , which, after its first publication (1892), had five editions until 1919. The translations and revisions of this book published in the United States (1897), Great Britain (1901) and Spain (1925) were also published several times, the Spanish even seven times by 1953.

Steuding also published essays and reviews as well as articles in Roscher's Extensive Lexicon of Greek and Roman Mythology .
