The eleven-point ladybird ( Coccinella undecimpunctata ) is a beetle from the ladybird family (Coccinellidae).

features

The beetles are about four to five millimeters long. They have a black body with orange to red wings that have 7 to 11 black points. It rarely happens that the dots flow into each other or that a thin yellow ring surrounds them. The pronotum is black like the underside, but is colored white at the front corners. In addition, there are two small white spots on the head between the eyes, touching them.

distribution

The beetle species was originally found only in the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. Their occurrence extends as far as Scandinavia and Iceland. In North America, it was first detected in Massachusetts in 1912. It has established itself in northeast North America from Ohio to Newfoundland and in northwest Oregon to British Columbia. The species is also found in North Africa, the Azores and the Middle East. In New Zealand the species was probably introduced for biological pest control and is now widespread there.

Way of life

The beetle species is common in the dune area of the sea coasts and inland in floodplains. Typical habitats of the halophilic species are field margins and ruderal areas as well as dry forest edges. The beetles are often found on herbaceous plants and grasses such as common beach grass or purple willow .

Like most ladybird species, the beetles and larvae of the eleven-spotted ladybird feed on aphids . Here Pulvinaria floccifera from the family of cup scale insects is called.

The females lay their eggs in small amounts on leaves, mostly near aphid colonies. The larvae go through four stages between which they molt. Eventually they pupate . The duration of the individual development phases depends on the temperature and is shorter at higher temperatures. The beetle species usually develops at least two generations per year. The adult beetles usually overwinter in larger groups.

The ladybird brackish wasp ( Dinocampus coccinellae ) is mentioned as an important parasitoid of the ladybird species .
