Elfriede Soup was the youngest of five children (two brothers, two sisters) of the Soest brush maker Carl Soup, who had been making brushes in Soest since 1894. Ms. Suppe took over the business from her brother Karl in 1971 and ran it until 1994, 100 years after the business opened and two years before her death at the age of 86. It is the subject of numerous anecdotes in Soest and the surrounding area. The Elfriede-Suppe-Stiftung, founded in 1999, whose foundation capital (2008: € 250,000) comes from the sale of the house at Petristraße 5 in Soest, is a hospice foundation.

There is a memorial plaque in her honor at Elfriede Suppe's shop at Petristraße 5.
