The Elgeyo Escarpment is a fracture stage that was created by post- Miocene faults and can be seen in the Miocene strata. The strata is part of the western wall of the Great African Rift Valley .

The north-western part of Kenya has mainly three geographic zones that run parallel from north to south. There is the plateau that gradually rises to 3,350 meters above sea level to the Cherangani Hills . In the transition zone lies the Elgeyo Escarpment, which quickly gives way to the lower Kerio Valley . The annual amount of precipitation in the area of the layer level is between 100 and 140 cm.
