Elias & His Zig Zag Jive Flutes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elias & His Zig Zag Jive Flutes was a musical group from South Africa in the 1950s. Jack Lerole fronted the band. Their style of music was Kwela . In 1958 the British television company ATV used their piece Tom Hark for the series The Killing Stones based on the book by Wolf Mankowitz . It peaked at number 2 on the UK charts. In the same year, Columbia Records released another single by the group called Zeph Boogie , which, however, could not build on the success.

Tom Hark has been covered several times successfully, for example by the Ted Heath Band on the Blue Beat label , by the Ramsay Lewis Trio , in 1977 by Bert Kaempfert and as Windy with the Paul Gayten Orchestra on the Argo 5300 label . The punk group The Piranhas from Brighton covered the piece Tom Hark in 1980. It reached the top 10 of the British charts. In 2005 the piece was covered again as Tom Hark (We Want Falmer!) By Seagulls Ska in order to raise money for the new football stadium of the Brighton & Hove Albion club .
