Elijah Legwaila

Elijah WMJ Legwaila (* 1939 ) is a Botswana administrative officer and lawyer.

Life

Legwaila was initially a primary school teacher and also completed an undergraduate degree at Moeng College . He then completed a law degree at what was then the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS) with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) before earning a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at Harvard University . In 1972, he joined the public service and was initially State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General. In 1975 he was appointed Principal State Counsel , in 1976 Assistant Attorney General and in 1977 he was appointed Deputy Attorney General .

After 17 years in the attorney general, Legwaila took over the post of permanent secretary in 1989 to President Quett KJ Masire and held this post as the highest official of the presidential office until the end of Masire's office in 1998. He then became a judge at the Labor Court in 1998 appointed, whose president he became in 2000. He is also Chairman of the Council of the University of Botswana .
