The Order of Elizabeth was on 17 September in 1898 by Emperor I Franz Joseph the first and only women's Order of Merit of Austria-Hungary in honor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary donated. At the same time, it served in memory of Empress Elisabeth, who was murdered in Geneva on September 10, 1898 . It could be awarded to all women, regardless of their status or religion, whether married or single, as a reward for services that were acquired in various professions or in other ways for the general good in the religious, charitable and philanthropic areas.

The first Grand Cross , the foundation of which was originally planned for December 2, 1898 (50 years of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I), was awarded to Countess Irma Sztáray , last lady-in-waiting of Empress Elisabeth, on September 17 of that year . The first class with a star and the Elisabeth Cross were donated by imperial handwriting on April 30, 1918, hence the small number of women who wore them.

Order decoration

The medal is a golden equal-armed cross, the arms of which are stylized lily blossoms. Each flower is in three parts, the two outer leaves are red, the middle white enamel. Roses made of green enameled leaves and red flowers are embedded between the arms of the cross. In the white medallion of the cross, the bust of St. Elisabeth turned to the right can be seen on the front and a golden rose with the initial E (Elisabeth) on the back .

Others

After the death of the entrusted, the medals and the statutes had to be returned to the chancellery.

With the end of the monarchy in 1918, the order expired.
