history

Emergence

The pastor of the Protestant parish in Havetoft , Johannes Gottsched Eduard Witt , founded the Elisabethheim Havetoft as an orphanage . The reason for this was the early death of his daughter and the promise made to her to dedicate the funds previously spent on her to caring for orphans. The foundation stone was laid on June 1, 1887 in the municipality of Havetoft, Schleswig district , in the southern part of Schleswig . The first child was admitted on November 2, 1888. The construction of the orphanage and most of the entertainment were financed from funds pooled by donors from the church and community movement , of which Pastor Witt was one of the leading men. Pastor Witt named the new work after his late daughter Elisabeth.

In 1893 a school was added and in 1903 the "Inspector's House" was added. In 1911 a large hall was added. The number of places grew to 60 and not only orphans, but also neglected children and children from problem families were accepted. Their own farm was used to supply and educate the children.

In 1917 the "Friedrichsruh" farm was acquired as a teacher and employee apartment. During the Second World War there were repeated attempts to close the home because of its Christian orientation. Despite his clearly non-National Socialist educational work, the work was able to be maintained. At the end of the war, many refugee children who were picked up were taken in and some of them can be brought to relatives via the tracing services .

Expansion after the Second World War

In 1960 the main building was expanded and sports facilities were added. With the construction of the residential group houses Schwalbennest and Fuchsbau (1969 and 1973), the residential group principle became standard. The average number of children was 82. The Schwanenblick House followed. In 1979 the special education center "Biberbau" was inaugurated, in 1996 and 1999 the residential group houses Spatzennest and Feldheck in the district of Hostrup. In 2015, the Osterkoppel residential group house in Havetoftloit followed, with space for 10 young people and their carers.

Monument protection

The main house of Elizabeth's home and its outbuildings are as since 2017 impersonal entity on the list of cultural monuments of Schleswig-Holstein, Schleswig-Flensburg monument list. The monument value of the historical building (main house of Alexander Wilhelm Prale ) results from the historical, structural and cultural landscape.

Todays situation

The Elisabethheim now looks after an average of 82 children, adolescents and young adults in its predominantly decentralized residential groups. There is also a day group, socio-educational family support, assisted living and systemic family therapy. In Haus Friedrichsruh, in addition to a regular group, young adults with mental and emotional disabilities are looked after. Under one roof with the therapy area, there is a school with a focus on emotional and social development as well as a practice for occupational therapy . These offers are also aimed at people who do not live in the Elisabethheim. For the Schleswig-Flensburg district, taking into care (comparable to a child and youth shelter) is perceived. The Elisabethheim Havetoft sees itself as a remedial youth welfare facility and particularly looks after children and young people with developmental problems. A protection center for unaccompanied minor refugees has existed since spring 2010 . The farm, which is run as a special purpose farm, is ecologically managed. It serves socio-pedagogically supported support and employment measures for disadvantaged young people and young adults.

The consciously Christian orientation and the connection to the church and community movement have persisted to this day. A quarterly magazine has been published since 1886, today under the title "Elisabethheim Havetoft - Magazine for Friends and Patrons".

Current

In 2013 the Elisabethheim Havetoft celebrated its 125th anniversary and is one of the oldest child and youth welfare institutions in Schleswig-Holstein.
