Elizabeth Nyumi

Elizabeth Nyumi Nungarrayi (* 1947 near Balgo , Western Australia ) is an Aboriginal artist from the Warlayirti Artists . She lives and works in Billiluna , an Aboriginal settlement near Balgo.

Life

Elizabeth lived nomadically with her family. Her mother died after a dingo bite when Elizabeth was very young. She saw the first whites in 1957. As a young girl, she went to the Balgo Hills Aboriginal Mission with her father and family . From there she was taken to Billiluna Station , where she worked as a house helper. Then she worked on various cattle farms.

Her brothers are the artists Brandy Tjungurrayi and Patrick Tjungurrayi . Elizabeth married Palmer Gordon and had four daughters with him, one of whom died.

Elizabeth started painting in 1987. The subjects of her paintings are the native flora such as bush plums , bush tomatoes and seeds, also rock caves, objects from her early life such as coolamons , grave sticks and stories of the dreamtime occur. Her dreamtime stories include the subject of the grandmother killing a snake and eating it with her three children, and the Tingari songlines about a group of elders . Originally she did not paint in the dot painting style . In her later works she uses dotted lines in yellow, red and green.

Her paintings have been the subject of several solo exhibitions. She was the first female artist from the Warlayirti Artists , selected for the 2004 Biennale of Sydney . Her works are in national and international collections.
