Elke Bartels

Elke Bartels (* 1956 ) is the police chief of Duisburg . As such, it is responsible for the safety of the people in the city of Duisburg and for the around 900 kilometers of navigable waterways in North Rhine-Westphalia (see North Rhine-Westphalia waterway police ). The work of the authority was criticized in public discourse after the accident at the Love Parade in 2010 .

Bartels has a doctorate in law. With a few interruptions, she worked for the Düsseldorf district government since 1984 . Since 1997, she has been the head of various departments, including the "Danger Defense" department, which until 2007 also included police supervision. Bartels lives in Düsseldorf with her husband and son.

At the cabinet meeting of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia ( Cabinet Kraft I ) on September 13, 2010, Bartels was proposed and confirmed as police president at the suggestion of Interior Minister Ralf Jäger . She succeeded Rolf Cebin , who retired at the end of May 2010 after reaching the age limit.
