Ella Michailowna Polyakova ( Russian Элла Михайловна Полякова , English transcription Ella Mikhaylovna Polyakova , born February 7, 1941 ) is a Russian peace and human rights activist who is involved in the Union of Committees of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia in Saint Petersburg . Among other things, she received the Aachen Peace Prize in 2004 and the Hessian Peace Prize in 2015 .

Life

Polyakova studied electrical engineering in Leningrad until 1965 and worked as an engineer at a state research institute and in private laboratories until 1997. During this time she was also employed at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute. From 1987 to 1990 she worked at a Leningrad institute on issues relating to the competence of people with disabilities. In 1992 she was an advisor to the St. Petersburg Organization of the Republican Party of the Russian Federation .

In 1993 she was elected chairman of the St. Petersburg Soldiers' Mothers, an organization she founded in 1991. She dealt particularly with the so-called Dedowschtschina , a system of subordination in the Russian armed forces , which includes the usual harassment of senior citizens to conscripts . In addition, this work led her to criticize human rights violations during operations by the Russian army in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Ukraine. In 2007 she was temporarily detained. In 2010 she moved to the Presidential Council of the Russian Federation as an army expert .

Awards (selection)

Polyakowa received the Peace Prize named after Galina Wassiljewna Starowoitowa in 1999 and the Aachen Peace Prize in 2004 . With the most recent honor she was awarded the Hessian Peace Prize in July 2015 . In a tribute to the award winner by the Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier it was said: "With her commitment, Ella Mikhaylovna Polyakova is sending a courageous sign for peace and democracy, especially in times of conflict . " The laudation was given by the former Hessian Finance Minister Karl Starzacher .
