Ellen Elizabeth King (born January 16, 1909 in Renfrew , Scotland , † February 1994 in Parkgate , England ) was a British swimmer who won two Olympic silver medals.

Career

At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris , Ellen King competed in the 100-meter backstroke . In the first heat she finished fourth in 1: 38.2 minutes. Five swimmers qualified for the final, Ellen King was sixth fastest in the preliminary run.

In 1927, the second European championships took place after 1926. At the European Swimming Championships in Bologna in 1927 , competitions for women were also on the program for the first time. The British 100-meter freestyle relay with Marion Laverty , Valerie Davis , Ellen King, and Margaret Cooper won the title ahead of the Dutch and the Germans.

At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , the freestyle relay from the United States won ahead of the British relay with Margaret Cooper, Sarah Stewart , Irene Tanner and Ellen King. Two days later, the Dutchwoman Marie Braun won the 100-meter backstroke in 1: 22.0 minutes ahead of Ellen King in 1: 22.2 minutes and Margaret Cooper in 1: 22.8 minutes.

In 1930, the British Empire Games, the forerunner of the Commonwealth Games, were held for the first time in Hamilton, Canada . At the British Empire Games in 1930 Margaret Cooper won over 100 yards freestyle for England in front of Ellen King, who started for Scotland. In the breaststroke over 220 yards, Ellen King won bronze and the Scottish freestyle relay with Sarah Stewart, Ellen King, Jean McDowell and Jessie McVey took third place.

After her career as an active competitive athlete, Ellen King worked as a swimming instructor in Edinburgh. She even swam after her 80th birthday. In 2002 she was inducted into the new Scottish Sports Hall of Fame . She has also been a member of the Scottish Swimming Association's Hall of Fame since 2010 .
