Ellen Reid

Ellen Reid (* 1983 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee ) is an American composer and sound artist . In 2019 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize of Music for her opera prism .

life and work

After attending Oak Ridge High School, Ellen Reid studied at Columbia University (Bachelor of Fine Arts, 2005) and then taught for over two years as a music teacher at an international school in Thailand, where she also worked with local artists. In 2009 she moved to Los Angeles and graduated with a Master of Arts from the California Institute of the Arts .

Reid has worked as artist in residence at the University of California, Irvine , the University of Tennessee and the Opera Omaha, among others . The work of the composer and sound artist ranges from opera to sound design and film music to compositions for chamber ensembles and choirs. She was the first female composer to have works premiered by all four of Los Angeles' leading musical institutions: the Los Angeles Philharmonic , the Los Angeles Opera , the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale . One of their creations is the installation Lonely Traveler at the Ruhrtriennale in Essen 2011.

Ellen Reid's opera prism based on a libretto by Roxie Perkins , which premiered in Los Angeles on November 29, 2018 , earned the composer the Pulitzer Prize of Music in 2019.
