Elmo is a place in the Maremma region in Tuscany , Province of Grosseto in Italy , also a district (Frazione) of the municipality of Sorano .

geography

The place is located on the southeast side of Monte Elmo at an altitude of 510 meters. The place is at a crossroads: you can drive south from Elmo to Sorano, northeast to Montevitozzo or west to Montebuono . The distance to Sorano is about 12 km, to Grosseto it is just under 70 km.

Settlement geography

The settlement area of ​​the place consists of the main town Elmo (510 m above sea level, 39 residents) as well as the smaller settlements Casa Burlandi , Casa Monnoni and Il Poggiolo and the smaller towns Casa Sbraci (546 m above sea level, 18 residents), Il Palazzetto (485 m above sea level, 16 residents), Le Pianacce (485 m above sea level, 23 residents) and Pantagnone (571 m above sea level, 20 residents).

history

The land around Elmo was under the Grand Duke Cosimo III. de 'Medici a fiefdom that was called Ermo Vivo in 1707 . He had given it to Tommaso and Marcello Cervini. The two were nephews of the Bishop of Montepulciano . In 1749 the fiefdom was legally deleted, like all other fiefdoms in Tuscany .

Architectural monuments and sights

There are two places of worship in the village, an old church from the 16th century , which is now in ruins, and the new parish church of San Giovanni Decollato . In the latter there are three works of art that used to be seen in the old church: the Annunciazione (the Annunciation), the Vergine in trono con i Santi (Virgin enthroned with saints) and the Sposalizio della Vergine (the Marriage of the Virgin) .

Only ruins remain of the Abbey of Montecalvello. It was founded in the Middle Ages as a Benedictine monastery and became known through a stay by Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi von Soana, who later became Pope under the name of Gregory VII .

Since the settlements were administratively recorded differently at the end of the 1990s, the figures from 2001 onwards only relate to the main town.
