Else Mayer (born February 21, 1891 in Pforzheim ; † April 27, 1963 in Bonn ) was a German nun and member of the women's movement in the first period of feminism . She was one of the pioneers of the German women's movement. Together with Alexandra Bischoff she founded the Redemption League .

Life

Else Mayer was born as the daughter of the jewelry manufacturer Victor Mayer and his wife Lina. She attended the Pforzheimer Höhere Töchterschule, today's Hilda-Gymnasium. Since she was a woman, however, she could not get the high school diploma. After visiting several women's monasteries, she founded the Erlöserbund in 1916. With the support of her family and her dowry, she bought buildings in Bonn, Breslau and Cologne and supported young female students by giving them accommodation. She was the first general superior until her death.

The Erlöserbund was abolished in 2005 and converted into a charitable foundation. From 2006 to 2018, the Else Mayer Foundation awarded the Else Mayer Prize to people who succeed Else Mayer. The prize was first awarded to Annette Schavan in 2006 . In 2007 the feminist Alice Schwarzer received the award. The Else Mayer Foundation dissolved in 2019 and transferred its assets to the Hildegardis Association . Since then, he has been granting Else Mayer loans to women studying.
