The Elsterpurzler is a German domestic pigeon breed . They are lively, agile pigeons from the group of bottlenose pigeons, which are known for certain styles of flight, “standing” and “tumbling”. The Elsterpurzler is one of the oldest German pigeon breeds.

history

In the 19th century, the Elsterpurzler was a widespread pigeon that was given different names in different regions. It was increasingly forgotten at the turn of the century, as the long-beaked bottlenose dolphins became fashionable and their breeders pursued the ideal of the Simpson magpie bred in England. He only survived quietly in the country, with a few pigeon lovers who did not emulate the fashions and continued their breeding even during the world wars. In the post-war years, the "long-billed breeders" initially rejected the recognition of the Elsterpurzler as an independent breed. This took place with the publication of the model description in June 1951.

The unlucky ones were bred in Upper Lusatia after 1950 and were adopted as a color variant in the standard of the Association of German Poultry Breeders after German reunification . Since 2012, with the recognition of the unlucky, blue-hammered Elsterpurzlers, a total of 14 colors of this breed have been recognized.
