Emanuel Engel (1886)

Emanuel Engel (born October 20, 1844 in Prague , † October 26, 1907 in Karlsbad ) was a Czech doctor and politician.

Life

During his studies at the University of Prague he devoted himself to the Czech national literary life. At the end of 1868 he worked as a doctor, first in Prague, then in Benešov and later in Karlsbad. From 1875 to 1881 he stayed abroad.

In 1883 Engel was elected to the Bohemian Landtag and in 1885 as a member of the Young Bohemian Party ( Národní strana svobodomyslná ) to the Imperial Council . After the Rieger affair in 1887, he was expelled from the Reichsrat together with Eduard Grégr and two other party members. After the establishment of the independent Young Bohemian Parliamentary Club ( Mladočeský parlamentní klub ), he was its chairman and speaker for many years.

In the 1990s he was a proponent of positive politics . After the fall of Badeni in 1897, he campaigned for Josef Kaizl to be accepted into the Thun government. He defended the unstable Bohemian policy from 1897 to 1899 with the words: “We are accused of opportunism. We work with the given conditions, however, not carelessly, but after careful consideration. ”The critics, however, rightly accused this party of the meager successes.

In 1900 he renounced the chairmanship of the Young Bohemian Parliamentary Club and withdrew completely from politics a year later. Although he remained a member of the state parliament, he did not take part in the meetings. After being voted out of office, he only worked as a successful spa doctor in Karlsbad.

Works

He published the volume of poems Poems (Básně) and was chairman of the Ruch literary circle .
