Ballin founded a branch of HAPAG in Emden in 1901. The city's port had been modernized considerably in the period between the Franco-German War and before the First World War. The transport routes to the south in the direction of the Ruhr area have been significantly improved , primarily through the construction of the Dortmund-Ems canal and other canals. A trading partnership between HAPAG and Westfälische Transport-Aktien-Gesellschaft (WTAG) finally laid the foundation for HAPAG's good economic development in Emden. The aim of the trading partnership was to land bulk cargo in the Emden port and bring it from here to the Ruhr area. In 1906 the city of Ballin donated a 600 m² building plot on the corner of Schweckendieckplatz and Ringstrasse. An office building was built there by 1914. In 1912/1913 HAPAG withdrew from Emden. There the company founded an independent subsidiary, Emder Verkehrsgesellschaft AG. It was entered in the commercial register on April 12, 1913. The purpose of the company is to promote trade, industry and transport in Emden and the companies of all such commercial transactions that serve this purpose are entered in the register. The company provided utility services during the First World War. In 1920 it entered inland shipping. During the occupation of the Ruhr in 1923-25, the EVAG supplied the population with imported coal from England. It then transported reparations on behalf of Siemens from 1925 to 1930 and imported timber from Eastern Europe from 1926 to 1939. During the Second World War it was mainly engaged in the transport of armaments. In 1940 the Reichswerke Hermann Göring took over the company. After the Second World War, British occupation troops moved into the administration building of EVAG, which from 1946 took over the transport of rubble. The reprivatisation of EVAG began in 1954 and was completed in 1959 when the last shares were transferred from the federal government to WTAG. During this time the company started importing raw materials. Scandinavian ore was landed in large quantities and transported to the Ruhr area after being loaded onto barges. With the construction of the Volkswagen factory in Emden, the automobile handling was added in 1964. In this area, it was active alongside the companies VW Logistics and Anker Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft in Emden Hafen until all three founded a joint venture in 1987 under the name Autoport Emden GmbH . The port of Emden is currently Volkswagen’s largest automobile hub and the third largest automobile transshipment port in Europe after Bremerhaven and Zeebrugge.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of EVAG, a ceremony with over 200 invited guests from business and politics took place on April 12, 2013 in the port of Emden at "Middelmantje".
