Emil Schartmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Adalbert Schartmann (* 1809 in Berlin ; † after 1840) was a German still life painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Schartmann devoted himself to portrait painting in 1827 , in which he was taught by Wilhelm Herbig , a portrait painter and teacher at the Prussian Academy of the Arts . From 1833 to 1834 he was a student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Theodor Hildebrandt . During this time he switched to painting flowers and fruits. Of three pieces of flowers that he exhibited in Düsseldorf in 1835, two were acquired by the Kunstverein for the Rhineland and Westphalia . According to Rudolf Wiegmann , however, he was not one of the most important artists in this genre. From 1836 he lived again in his hometown. Alexander von Humboldt was one of Schartmann's sponsors : He had Schartmann's pictures brought to the Berlin Palace. Afterwards he inquired of the king about prices for pictures which he had liked while looking through. In 1840 Schartmann lived as a "flower painter" in Berlin.
