Emil Spitra

Emil Spitra (born February 16, 1851 in Marburg an der Drau ; † September 10, 1924 at the Spitra-Hof in Klagenfurt ) was a major Austrian importer who ran a wine and delicatessen store in Klagenfurt.

Emil Spitra the Elder Older came to Klagenfurt around 1870, where he initially worked in a general store. On September 11, 1880, he married Theresia Mathilde Anna Semmelrock (born November 3, 1859 in Klagenfurt; † January 18, 1922 there) from the wealthy butcher family Semmelrock, who had lived in Klagenfurt for generations. This gave him access to the important middle class families in Klagenfurt at that time, such as the margarine and soap manufacturers Hatheyer, the plumbers and plumber Filli and the hoteliers Trabesinger and Moser-Verdino, who were all related and related by marriage. Around 1885 he was able to take over his employer's business.

Customers included not only the upper class and the nobility, but also the imperial court. Emil Spitra was appointed purveyor to the imperial court for his services . Spitra had its own fleet of vehicles and stables, as well as shipping. Goods were sent throughout the dual monarchy and abroad. Spitra also supplied the Bavarian and Saxon kings.

With the success the company was able to expand. In 1906/07 the old one-story "Spitra-Haus" at Bahnhofstrasse 9, Burggasse 19 and Fleischbankgasse 2 was demolished and a new building was built at a cost of 650,000 crowns . The "Spitra-Hof" was designed on several floors with turrets and bay windows to give the company headquarters a representative character and to demonstrate Spitra's ultimate rise to become a wholesaler.

The successor was his son Emil Karl Franz Spitra (born May 26, 1894 in Klagenfurt; † October 31, 1969 ibid), called Emil Spitra d. Younger ones. Spitra d. J. fought as an officer in the First and Second World Wars. The "Spitra-Hof" suffered damage during the Second World War , but it was damaged by Emil Spitra the Elder. J. 1954 could be fixed.
