Emily Joanna Gowers (nee Thomas ; * 1963 ) is a British classical philologist .

Life

Gowers attended Oxford High School. She studied Classics at Trinity College (Cambridge) and received her BA in 1985, followed by her MA in 1990. In 1990 she received her PhD in Cambridge with a dissertation “The Representation of Food in Roman Literature”. From 1988 to 1991 she was a Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge. From 1991 to 1993 Gowers was a lecturer in Latin at University College London, followed by a time as an Honorary Research Fellow at the same institution. In 1998 Gowers was appointed lecturer at the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge and in 2000 moved to Princeton University as a lecturer in the Department of Classics . She returned to Cambridge in 2002 as a lecturer in classical music and became a lecturer in 2009. Gowers has been a lecturer in Latin literature since 2013. She was appointed Professor of Latin Literature in 2016 .

Gowers was elected a member of the Academia Europaea in 2013. In July 2019 she was elected a Fellow of the British Academy . In 1988 she married the mathematician Timothy Gowers . They divorced in 2007. They have three children together.
