Emily Anne Thornberry PC (born July 27, 1960 in Guildford ) is a British lawyer and politician. She is a member of the Labor Party .

childhood and education

Her father was Cedric Thornberry, an international law attorney, professor at the London School of Economics and later Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations. Her parents separated early, so her mother had to raise her and her two brothers alone. Her academic achievements were insufficient for access to a grammar school . Nevertheless, she later reached her A-Levels through evening classes and was then able to study law at the University of Kent in Canterbury. After her admission to the bar, she specialized in human rights.

politics

Thornberry joined the Labor Party at the age of 17 and joined the Transport and General Workers Union . She has represented the London constituency of Islington South and Finsbury since 2005 , which she was able to defend despite the poor performance of her party in the 2019 British general election. Emily Thornberry belongs to the union-affiliated moderate wing and has been one of the leading politicians of her party in the lower house ( Frontbencher ) for some time .

Memberships in shadow cabinets of the opposition Labor Party:

  • 2011–2014: Shadow Attorney General (under Ed Miliband )
  • 2015–2016: Shadow Minister of State for Employment (under Jeremy Corbyn )
  • 2016: Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs
  • 2016: Shadow First Secretary of State

On November 20, 2014, she was forced to resign from her post in the shadow cabinet. The reason for this was a mocking photo that she published on Twitter. On it was a white delivery truck in front of a row house decorated with George's crosses. In English usage, the expression white van man is clichéd as a low-skilled self-employed person with narrow-minded views and a rowdy driving style. This is why the public perceived this as condescending and arrogant. In the 2016 EU referendum , she took a pro-European position. In contrast to Jeremy Corbyn, she was clearly in favor of another referendum.

Personal

Emily Thornberry is married to Sir Christopher Nugee, a judge on the High Court of Justice . They have 3 children together and live in Barnsbury, London.
