Emmanuel want you Mesnil

Emmanuel Mangel du Mesnil (* 1815 ; † 1890 ) was a French painter , photographer , diplomat in Mexico and Vice-Consul of Argentina .

Live and act

Emmanuel Mangel du Mesnil, presumably a trained French painter and photographer, worked as a diplomat in Mexico from 1854. The Mexican government sent him to Argentina in 1856 as photographer and vice-consul, where he also ran a photo studio until 1861. He then worked as Foreign Minister for the Uruguayan government in Montevideo .

When Jacob Wothly presented the great results of his new invention, the Wothlytypie , to art photographers in Paris , Mesnil acquired the license for this process for an enormous sum in France and Belgium . Mesnil was so enthusiastic about the Wothlytypie that he gave Wothly an elegant equipage with horses. Mesnil called the Wothlytypie the egg of Columbus .

In 1865, Mesnil founded the French company of Wothlytypie in Paris with its seat at number 12 rue de la Grange-Batelière and became its director. Anyone who acquired a license and had the right to produce a Wothlytypie could become members of the society. The acquisition of patents and the necessary accessories took place exclusively through Mesnil and he also took care of the financing and costs of the association.

Until 1867, Mesnil worked in the Société française de Wothlytypie. In 1865 he made a print of the picture Drei Gigeuner by Jakob Wothly, which was probably one of his test photos that Wothly sent to anyone interested. After processing by the Société française de Wothlytypie, the picture was now referred to as “Shepherds / Pifferari with snack” (292 × 383 mm). Mesnil put a blind stamp in the lower right corner as a signature.
