Caran d'Ache , actually Emmanuel Poiré (* 1858 or 1859 in Moscow , † February 25, 1909 in Paris ) was a Russian-French caricaturist and humorous draftsman.

Life

Poiré's grandfather, who moved to Russia with the Napoleonic army in 1812, stayed there. When his grandson Emmanuel Poiré grew up, after his father's death in 1877 he decided to emigrate to France and do military service there. He did this to gain French citizenship, which he and his father no longer had.

In France he quickly adopted the pseudonym "Caran d'Ache". In the Russian language karandasch [карандаш] is nothing more than pencil . It is said to be derived from the Turkish kara (black) and tasch (stone, slate). In phonetically derived French pun can be ache with celery translate.

His first work was published in La Caricature , a magazine founded by Albert Robida in 1880 .

His most famous drawing is of a family during the Dreyfus Affair (1899); it appeared in the daily Le Figaro . It shows a family at dinner that degenerates into a wild brawl as soon as someone comes up with the subject of "Dreyfus". At the time, French society was deeply divided and anti-Semitism flared up.

In 1898 Caran d'Ache was co-founder, editor and draftsman of "Le P'sst", a satirical weekly magazine.

"Caran d'Ache" is also the name of the last manufacturer of pencils, products for painting and drawing as well as writing implements remaining in Switzerland, which was founded in Geneva in 1924 by Arnold Schweitzer. He chose the name because he was a great admirer of Poire's work.
