Empire Malta class
The Empire Malta class was a series of ten standard British cargo steamers built at the William Gray & Company shipyard in West Hartlepool during and shortly after the end of World War II . They belong to the group of Empire ships .
details
The Empire Malta class was built in 1944/45 to a design by the Merchant Shipping Department of the British Admiralty . The name was derived from the type ship Empire Malta . The ship type had a deadweight of around 4130 tons and reached a speed of eleven knots. The arrangement of the ships with superstructures slightly forward of amidships and the engine room aft was similar to that of contemporary tankers. It was chosen because the ships are not only used for the transport of general cargo and heavy cargo but also for bulk cargo and crate oilwere constructed and the risk of fire when transporting the latter cargo with the machinery located aft was estimated to be lower. The loading gear consisted of an 80-tonne heavy-lift boom , a 50-tonne heavy-lift boom and eight 3-tonne booms .
