The Empire Exhibition, Scotland 1938 (often also called the British Empire Exhibition, Glasgow ) was an international exhibition held in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow from May to December 1938 . It marked the anniversary of the first major International Exhibition (Glasgow 1888) 50 years earlier in Kelvingrove Park . Regardless of the rainy summer, 12 million visitors came. The largest buildings in the exhibition were the Palais der Technik and the Industriepalast. The landmark was the Tait Tower , a 140 m high observation tower (official name: Tower of Empire), named after the chief planner of the exhibition, Thomas S. Tait . The tower itself was supposed to remain permanently, but it was dismantled again in July 1939, probably for military reasons. There were also numerous British Empire country pavilions . The Palais der Künste has been preserved. On the occasion of the exhibition, the Empire Exhibition Trophy was played in a soccer tournament .
