history

In 1997 the BASF Magnetics division of BASF was sold to the newly founded company EMTEC Consumer GmbH . The sale included a five-year license to use the BASF brand name . This mark was printed on all products up to 2002. During the transition period, the label "BASF-made by EMTEC" was used for advertising. After the license agreement expired, only the name Emtec was used. The economic and technical change in the consumer market, which led from analogue media to digital media, resulted in a sharp drop in sales figures. In 2003 the company became insolvent . On January 14, 2003, Emtec announced the opening of insolvency proceedings at the Ludwigshafen district court . Jobst Wellensiek was appointed as insolvency administrator .

After the bankruptcy, the company was dissolved and the plants closed. The machines for producing the tapes were sold to the Dutch manufacturer RMG International . Until 2012, he produced all common magnetic tapes with the machines taken over from Emtec.

The Emtec brand is now owned by the French company Dexxon Data Media SAS , which continues to manufacture storage products under this brand.
