The Enciclopedia Libre Universal en Español is an online encyclopedia containing around 50,000 articles in Spanish , which split off from the then still young Spanish-language Wikipedia on February 26, 2002 and has since been operated on servers of the University of Seville .

The spin-off was triggered by an announcement by Wikipedia co-founder and Nupedia editor -in- chief Larry Sanger on February 13 on a Wikipedia mailing list regarding his future involvement in the two encyclopedia projects. He informed the other participants that his employment contract with the operating company Bomis had been terminated at the beginning of February and that he would limit his commitment accordingly. He did not rule out a return to Bomis, however, and pointed out that his salary could possibly be financed in the future from income from advertising on Wikipedia pages. Edgar Enyedy, an employee of the Spanish Wikipedia, was taken aback by this possibility, expressed the fear that Bomis might profit from the unpaid work of the authors, and stopped his work on Wikipedia. After the majority of his Spanish colleagues had shown solidarity with him and went on strike, he decided to try a new Spanish wiki encyclopedia, understood by Larry Sanger and Jimbo Wales as a fork .

Article numbers in Enciclopedia Libre and Spanish-language Wikipedia, 2002–2013

Work on the Spanish Wikipedia, which only a few days earlier (in February 2002) had overtaken the German version of the highest-page non-English edition, came to a virtual standstill in the months after the split, while the Enciclopedia Libre grew. In the autumn of the same year, discussions on the international mailing list were about to discontinue the Spanish Wikipedia project entirely and to link the Enciclopedia Libre in its place, while the Enciclopedia Libre was toyed with the idea of reintegrating it into Wikipedia - but neither was carried out . In the second half of 2003, a trend reversal in article growth was evident for the first time. In April 2004, both projects were about the same size, after which the number of articles in the Enciclopedia Libre remained behind compared to the Spanish Wikipedia. In July 2014, the Spanish language Wikipedia had almost 23 times as many articles as the Enciclopedia Libre. In August 2014, ten users made at least one edit in the encyclopedia in the last thirty days ( active users ), in the Spanish-language Wikipedia the figure was around 15,000.
