The Encyclopedia of Philosophy (EoP) is one of the most important specialist dictionaries on philosophy .

The first edition of the EoP appeared in 1967 in eight volumes by Macmillan and was edited by Paul Edwards ; a reprint with unchanged content appeared in 1972 in four (double) volumes.

The second, largely revised edition appeared in 2006 in ten volumes, edited by Donald M. Borchert at Thomson Gale with ISBN 0-02-865780-2 . Volumes 1–9 contain overview articles in alphabetical order, volume 10 supplements or updates some articles and provides a thematic overview, bibliographies and a comprehensive index. This edition was also published in electronic form with ISBN 0-02-866072-2 .

Along with the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy , the EoP is one of the most important reference works in the English language on philosophy in general.

Paul Edwards, who still saw the revision of the encyclopedia after four decades, commented to Peter Singer the changes it made to the first edition with regret: "The original stringency is watered down and the openness to postmodern ideas too great."
